Freezer time calculator

Select a food and the date you froze it to find the day it passes its peak. Frozen food does not turn unsafe, but its texture and flavor slowly decline.

Your peak-quality date will show here.

Why this is about quality

According to FSIS, food held at a constant 0°F (-18°C) remains safe indefinitely. What FoodKeeper's freezer times measure is how long the food holds on to its best taste and texture. Past that point you can still eat it, though it may come out dry, tough or flat-tasting.

Freezer tips

  • Wrap food snugly and press out the air to avoid freezer burn.
  • Lay bags flat so food freezes and thaws faster.
  • Write the contents and the date on every package.

Questions & answers

Is frozen food still safe once the freezer time is up?
Yes. Food stored at 0°F (-18°C) remains safe indefinitely. The freezer time only marks when its quality, meaning flavor and texture, begins to slip.
What causes freezer burn?
Air reaching the surface leaves dry, grayish spots. The food is still safe to eat; cut the affected areas away before or after cooking.
When does the freezer clock start?
On the day the food went into the freezer, not the day you bought it. Write the date on each bag as you freeze it.
How cold should a freezer be?
Keep it at 0°F (-18°C) or below, and confirm the temperature with an appliance thermometer.
