Background

Getting to know soda

Soda sits in the drinks section of our food guide. The USDA FoodKeeper database files it under the name “Soda (carbonated cola drinks, mixers, diet sodas; bottles or cans)”. Going by USDA FoodKeeper, it lasts 2–3 days in the fridge. It falls into the lower-risk group, so storing it well is mostly about keeping quality rather than about safety. Best storage spot: the door runs warmer than the rest of the fridge, which suits condiments and drinks that hold up well against spoiling.

Beverages run the full range from shelf-stable to very perishable. Unopened cans, cartons and bottles can last for months, but after opening, fresh juice and plant-based milk act like fresh food and belong in the fridge. Coffee and tea don't become unsafe but do lose their aroma, while wine and spirits change once they are exposed to air.

Straight answers

Your soda storage questions

How long does soda last in the fridge?

2–3 days when held at 4°C (40°F) or below (opened). Seal it well so it stays free of moisture and fridge odors.

How long does soda last in the freezer?

Not listed. FoodKeeper does not list a freezer time for soda.

How long does soda last at room temperature?

Room-temperature storage does not suit it; keep it in the fridge.

How long does soda last after opening?

2–3 days refrigerated after opening. As soon as the seal is broken, the date on the package no longer counts.

How long does unopened soda last?

Up to the package date, provided the seal is unbroken and it is stored the way the label directs.

How long is soda good after the expiration date?

Go by the date printed on the package. Labels such as "best-by" and "sell-by" are about peak quality and how stores rotate stock, not about safety — infant formula is the one product whose use-by date federal law requires.

How do you know if soda is bad?

Musty, sour or vinegar-like rather than fresh. Bitter, sour or flat — the quality is gone. New cloudiness, a film, or sediment that was not there before.

How to spot spoiled soda

Odor

Musty, sour or vinegar-like rather than fresh.

Taste

Bitter, sour or flat — the quality is gone.

Look

New cloudiness, a film, or sediment that was not there before.

Package

A swollen can, cap or carton — throw it out without tasting.

Inspect your soda and tick each warning sign you see

No boxes ticked? That's encouraging. Even so, confirm how long it has been stored, because the germs behind food poisoning can't be seen with the naked eye.

Even one of these means it has spoiled. Toss it, and never taste it to find out.

What's happening

What makes soda spoil

Once the seal on juice or a milk alternative is broken, yeasts and bacteria ferment its sugars, causing fizzing, sour smells and off flavors. Heat, light and air strip the fragrant oils from coffee and tea. An opened bottle of wine oxidizes and gradually turns into vinegar.

Don't do this

Mistakes people make storing soda

  • Leaving opened plant milk or juice out of the fridge.
  • Swigging straight from the bottle, which puts mouth bacteria into the drink.
  • Storing coffee in a see-through jar on the counter.
  • Leaving opened wine at room temperature without a cork.
Freezer

Can you freeze soda?

No FoodKeeper timeFoodKeeper does not list a freezer time for soda.
  1. 1Step 1

Liquids expand as they freeze, so leave room at the top of a freezer-safe container.

  2. 2Step 2

For small servings, freeze it in an ice-cube tray.

  3. 3Step 3

Defrost it in the fridge and give it a good shake before use.

Room temperature · 2-hour rule

Soda left out overnight

After opening, soda should live in the fridge. A night at room temperature hastens spoilage, so throw it out if the smell, look or taste seems wrong.

How to store it

Keeping soda in good shape

  • Keep unopened bottles and cartons in a cool, dark spot.
  • After opening, close it tightly and put it in the fridge.
  • Heat and light dull the flavor, so store it away from both.
Package dates

What the dates on soda packaging mean

Before opening

Go by the date printed on the package. Labels such as "best-by" and "sell-by" are about peak quality and how stores rotate stock, not about safety — infant formula is the one product whose use-by date federal law requires.

After opening

The printed date stops counting the moment the seal is broken. Allow 2–3 days in the refrigerator, starting on the day you open it.

Shopping

Choosing good soda at the store

  • Make sure caps and seals are intact.
  • Buy fresh juice from a refrigerated case.
  • Choose a bag of coffee small enough to finish in the few weeks after you open it.
Waste less

Soda: ways to finish it in time

  • Pour extra juice into ice-cube trays and freeze it for smoothies.
  • Cook with leftover wine, or freeze it for sauces.
  • Chill leftover coffee for iced drinks, or bake with it.

Soda myths: fact or fiction?

  1. 1.As long as it smells okay, soda is still safe after being refrigerated longer than 2–3 days.
    You got it!
    Not this time.

Partly true. Because soda is low-risk, going slightly beyond 2–3 days usually costs quality rather than safety. Look for mold and sniff for off odors first.

  2. 2.Putting soda in the freezer kills any bacteria on it.
    You got it!
    Not this time.

False. The freezer puts bacteria on hold rather than killing them. They start up again as the food warms, so let it thaw in the fridge, then cook or reheat it all the way through.

  3. 3.Soda holds up well in the freezer.
    You got it!
    Not this time.

Partly. FoodKeeper does not list a freezer time for soda.

  4. 4.Soda can be kept in the fridge door.
    You got it!
    Not this time.

True. The door runs warmer than anywhere else in the fridge, yet this food holds up well enough to be stored there.

  5. 5.Soda has to go in the fridge to stay safe.
    You got it!
    Not this time.

Not for safety reasons, but refrigeration keeps it at peak quality for longer. Go by the storage times listed on this page.

Reader questions

Soda: frequently asked questions

How long does soda last in the fridge?
Soda lasts 2–3 days when refrigerated at 40°F (4°C) or colder (opened). That figure comes from USDA FoodKeeper.
Can you freeze soda?
FoodKeeper does not list a freezer time for soda.
How long does unopened soda last?
Go by the package date. Opened, the window shrinks to 2–3 days refrigerated.
How can you tell if soda has gone bad?
Odor: musty, sour or vinegar-like rather than fresh; Taste: bitter, sour or flat — the quality is gone; Look: new cloudiness, a film, or sediment that was not there before.
Does soda go bad after the printed date?
Go by the date printed on the package. Labels such as "best-by" and "sell-by" are about peak quality and how stores rotate stock, not about safety — infant formula is the one product whose use-by date federal law requires.
What is the source for these storage times?
They come from USDA FoodKeeper, the food storage database run by the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). We last checked this page against the current FoodKeeper release.
What temperature is best for storing soda?
Set the fridge to 4°C (40°F) or below and the freezer to -18°C (0°F). The dial on a lot of fridges is optimistic and the real temperature runs higher, so a cheap appliance thermometer is money well spent. A fridge running even a few degrees above 4°C will noticeably eat into the 2–3 days fridge window for soda.
What should I store soda in?
Use its original container, tightly closed and refrigerated after opening. You want to block air and moisture, keep smells from traveling to other food, and be able to tell at a glance how old the food is. Jot the date on the lid or on a label so there is never any guesswork about its age.
Is the fridge door a good spot for soda?
Yes. Although the door is the warmest spot in the fridge, soda holds up against spoilage well enough to live there. Seal the lid firmly every time you use it.
Can you refreeze soda?
Yes, but only when it defrosted in the refrigerator and has not sat out at room temperature. Anything defrosted in the microwave or a cold-water bath needs to be cooked before it goes back into the freezer. Quality drops a little with every freeze-and-thaw round, so freeze in portions you'll use in one go.
Does freezing kill bacteria in soda?
No. At -18°C (0°F), bacteria stop multiplying, but they aren't killed off. Once soda thaws, any bacteria that were there wake up again, so defrost in the fridge and, where relevant, bring it up to a safe temperature when you cook or reheat it.
If soda smells okay but is beyond the storage time, is it still safe?
With a low-risk food such as soda, going beyond the storage time generally affects quality rather than safety. Look for mold, sniff for off odors and notice any strange taste, and get rid of it if anything seems wrong.
