## What Subaru Crosstrek owners report

- "Oil temperature warning light illuminated on October 5, 2026; dealer diagnosed CVT torque converter failure requiring replacement ($2,954 repair). This is the second CVT failure in two months: the same dealer replaced the CVT valve body in August 2026 (~$3,400) for the same warning light. Vehicle has remained parked..." -- owner of a 2023 Subaru Crosstrek, complaint filed 2026
- "This leaves the vehicle at risk of a repeat stall in traffic, as the underlying software defect that causes coils to overheat remains unaddressed in the 2020 model year and the remaining coils may already be at risk." -- owner of a 2020 Subaru Crosstrek, complaint filed 2026
- "My engine overheated at 125,000 miles roughly and 2025 and this year the engine oil is leaking into the coolant tank at 135,000 miles." -- owner of a 2019 Subaru Crosstrek, complaint filed 2026

## What the coolant temperature warning light means

A red coolant temperature light means the engine is overheating or about to. The most common cause is low coolant from a leak, followed by a stuck thermostat, a failed radiator fan, and a worn water pump. Pull over and shut the engine off as soon as it is safe, because continued driving can warp the cylinder head and destroy the engine. The most common causes, on any make:

1. **Low coolant from a leak** (most common)
2. **Thermostat stuck closed** (common)
3. **Radiator fan not working** (common)
4. **Failing water pump or broken belt** (less common)
