# Airbag light on? What it means and is it safe to drive

**Verdict:** Drive to a shop this week

- **Colour:** Red
- **Urgency:** This week
- **Most common cause:** Loose or damaged connector under a seat
- **Can I reset it?:** Yes, once fixed

## Quick answer

The airbag or SRS light means the airbag computer found a fault and may have turned off some or all airbags. The car drives normally, but you may not have airbag protection in a crash. Common causes include a loose connector under a seat, a worn clock spring in the steering wheel, and a seat belt buckle sensor. Have it diagnosed soon and check for open airbag recalls.

## What does the airbag (SRS) warning light mean?

The airbag light belongs to the supplemental restraint system, or SRS: the front and side airbags, curtain airbags, seat belt pretensioners, crash sensors and, on many cars, a passenger seat sensor. A control module, usually mounted low in the center of the car, decides in a crash which airbags and pretensioners to fire. To be ready, it constantly checks every one of those circuits for an open wire, a short or a reading outside its normal range.

When you switch on the ignition, the light comes on for a few seconds while the module runs a self-test, then goes out. If it stays on, flashes, or comes on while driving, the module has stored a fault code. Depending on the fault, it may switch off only the affected airbag or pretensioner, or the whole system, so you cannot tell from the light alone how much crash protection you still have.

## What does the airbag (SRS) warning light look like?

A seated person with a seat belt and a large circle (the airbag) in front of them, or the letters SRS or AIRBAG. It is red on most cars and amber on some.

| If the light is... | It means |
| --- | --- |
| Steady | A fault is stored in the airbag system and one or more airbags or seat belt pretensioners may be disabled. |
| Flashing | On some cars a flashing airbag light is a specific fault code pattern; treat it the same as a steady light. |

## Why is the airbag (SRS) warning light on?

1. **Loose or damaged connector under a seat** (common). Front seats carry wiring for side airbags, seat belt buckles, pretensioners and the passenger occupant sensor, and the plugs sit underneath. Sliding the seat over a bag, vacuuming under it, or a kick from a rear passenger can loosen or damage a connector. The light may come and go when the seat is moved or someone sits down.
2. **Worn clock spring in the steering wheel** (common). The clock spring is a coiled ribbon wire behind the steering wheel that keeps the driver airbag connected while the wheel turns. With age and many turns it can crack, especially on high-mileage cars. When it fails, the horn, cruise control or steering wheel buttons often stop working too. Repair is typically 250 to 600 dollars.
3. **Passenger occupant sensor fault** (less common). A sensor in the passenger seat estimates whether an adult, a child or nothing is sitting there and turns the passenger airbag on or off. A failed sensor, a damaged seat cover, a heavy bag or a child seat can confuse it. Watch the passenger airbag on or off indicator; it should match who is sitting there.
4. **Seat belt buckle or pretensioner fault** (less common). Each front buckle usually has a switch that tells the module whether the belt is fastened, and pretensioners tighten the belts in a crash. A buckle switch can wear or get jammed with debris, and a pretensioner that fired in a past collision stays faulted. A seat belt reminder that acts oddly can be an early clue.
5. **Crash sensor or airbag module fault, or a past crash** (less common). After any crash that fired airbags or pretensioners, the module stores a crash record and those parts must be replaced. Even without a deployment, water in the floor, corroded crash sensor plugs or a low-voltage event can store a fault in the module. A used car with this light on deserves an extra check for past crash damage.

## What to do right now

1. Check for open recalls on your VIN, since airbag recalls are common and the repair is free.
2. Make sure nothing is stuffed under the front seats and that seat connectors are not pulled. Do not unplug airbag connectors with the ignition on.
3. Have a shop with an SRS-capable scan tool read the airbag codes; a basic engine code reader cannot see them.
4. Until it is fixed, make sure children ride in the back seat in the right car seat for their age.

## How do you reset the airbag (SRS) warning light?

The airbag light only turns off after the fault is repaired and, on most cars, the stored code is cleared with an SRS scan tool. It will not turn off by itself if the fault is still there.

## Is it safe to drive with the airbag (SRS) warning light on?

> **Drive to a shop this week.** The car is mechanically safe to drive, but the airbags may not deploy in a crash, so get it diagnosed soon rather than ignoring it. Do not try to repair airbag parts yourself, because an accidental deployment can cause serious injury.

## What to tell your mechanic

Tell the shop when the light first came on and anything that happened before it: seat removal, cleaning under the seats, a jump start, a minor bump, or horn and steering wheel buttons that stopped working. Ask them to read the SRS codes with a tool that supports your make. They will check the code, inspect seat and steering wheel connectors, and check your VIN for recalls.

## How to keep the airbag (SRS) warning light off

- Keep bags, shoes and loose items out from under the front seats, where airbag wiring and connectors sit.
- Avoid leaving heavy objects on an empty passenger seat, which can confuse the occupant sensor.
- Check for open airbag recalls on your VIN every few months and book any free repair promptly.
- Keep the battery healthy, because low voltage or a careless jump start can store faults in the airbag module.
- Use a shop that follows SRS safety procedures for any seat, steering wheel or dashboard work.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is it safe to drive with the airbag light on?

The car will drive normally, but your airbags may not deploy in a crash. That raises the risk of serious injury for you and your passengers, so have it checked soon rather than living with it. Many states also fail a car at safety inspection when the airbag light stays on.

### Can a low battery cause the airbag light to come on?

Yes, a weak battery or a jump start can sometimes store a fault in the airbag module. The light may not go off on its own afterward, and the stored code may need to be cleared with an SRS scan tool. If it comes back after clearing, there is a real fault to find.

### Can I reset the airbag light myself?

Only with a scan tool that reads SRS codes, and only after the fault is fixed. Disconnecting the battery will not clear it on most cars. If the fault is still there, the light comes right back on, and clearing it does not restore protection the module has switched off.

### How much does it cost to fix an airbag light?

It ranges from almost nothing for a loose seat connector to about 250 to 600 dollars for a clock spring at an independent shop in 2026. Replacing a module or deployed parts after a crash costs much more. Check for recalls on your VIN first, because recall repairs are done free at a dealer.

### Can I fix the airbag light myself?

Usually not safely, beyond checking for items jammed under the seats and making sure seat connectors look plugged in with the ignition off. Airbags and pretensioners contain explosive charges, and handling them wrong can cause a deployment and serious injury. Leave SRS diagnosis and part replacement to a shop with the right tools.

### Will my airbags still work with the airbag light on?

They might not. Depending on the fault, the module may disable just one airbag or pretensioner, or the whole system, and the light does not tell you which. Assume you do not have full crash protection until a shop reads the codes and confirms what is affected.

### Why is my airbag light on after a minor accident?

Even a small crash can fire a seat belt pretensioner, damage a crash sensor or knock a connector loose, and the module then stores a fault or crash record. Some parts must be replaced once they have fired. Have an SRS scan done before relying on the system again.

### Will an airbag light fail a state inspection?

In many states with safety inspections, yes, an airbag light that stays on is a failure. Rules vary, and some states do not inspect at all. Inspectors often check that the light comes on briefly at startup and then goes out, so a light that never comes on can be a problem too.

### Is my airbag light covered by a recall?

Sometimes, yes. Airbag inflators, sensors and wiring have been the subject of many recalls across most brands. Enter your 17-character VIN on the NHTSA recall site or call a dealer to check. Recall repairs are free, even if you are not the original owner of the car.

### Can a child sit in the front seat with the airbag light on?

It is best not to, and children under 13 should ride in the back seat anyway. With a fault, the passenger airbag might fire when it should be off, or stay off when it should fire. Keep all children in the back in the right car seat until it is repaired.
