# Tire load index chart

## Quick answer

The load index is the number after the tire size (the **94** in 225/45R17 94W). It is the most weight one tire can carry at its maximum pressure: 94 means **670 kg (1,477 lb)** per tire. Never fit a lower load index than your car's door placard.

## How to use it

1. Find the load index on your door-jamb placard or current tires.
2. Choose new tires with the same or a higher load index.
3. Multiply by four to get the most all four tires can carry together; it must exceed your car's gross vehicle weight rating.

## Frequently asked questions

### What happens if the load index is too low?

The tire can overheat and fail under load, especially when the car is full or towing. Fitting a lower load index than specified is unsafe and may affect your insurance.

### Does XL on a tire change the load index?

Yes. XL (extra load) or "reinforced" tires carry a higher load index than standard-load tires of the same size, but only when inflated to the higher pressure stated by the tire maker.

### Are LT tire load ratings the same?

No. Light-truck tires use load ranges (C, D, E) and often show two load indexes for single and dual rear wheels, with different pressure tables. Follow the tire maker's LT table.
