# Wheel alignment cost

- **Typical cost:** $100-$250
- **Parts:** $0
- **Labor:** About 1 hour
- **Dealer:** $150-$300

## Quick answer

A four-wheel alignment usually costs $100 to $250 at an independent shop or tire store. A front-only alignment on an older car can be less. Cars with lane-keeping cameras may need a separate calibration after the alignment, and seized adjusters or worn parts add to the bill.

## What is wheel alignment (labor only) and why does it need replacing?

A wheel alignment adjusts the angles of the wheels so they point straight and sit square to the road. The three main angles are toe, which is how much the fronts of the tires point in or out; camber, the inward or outward tilt seen from the front; and caster, the steering axis angle that helps the wheel return to center. Most modern cars have adjustable toe at all four wheels, while camber and caster are adjustable on some.

Alignment drifts out of spec rather than wearing out. Hitting potholes and curbs, worn tie rods, ball joints, bushings and springs, and replacing steering or suspension parts can all change the angles. Toe that is off scrubs the tires sideways and can wear them quickly, while camber that is off wears the inside or outside edge. A car that pulls to one side or has an off-center steering wheel is a common sign. Most cars have no fixed alignment interval, so it is done after new tires, suspension work or an impact, or when wear shows up.

## How much does wheel alignment cost?

| | Typical cost |
| --- | --- |
| Parts | $0 |
| Labor | $100-$250 (About 1 hour) |
| Total at an independent shop | $100-$250 |
| Total at a dealer | $150-$300 |

## Cost by vehicle type

| Vehicle | Typical cost |
| --- | --- |
| Compact car | $100-$150 |
| Midsize sedan | $100-$160 |
| Small SUV/crossover | $110-$180 |
| Full-size truck/SUV | $120-$200 |
| Luxury/European | $150-$250 |

Ranges are for an independent shop. Expect the high end or more for European luxury makes and dealer service.

## What changes the price?

- **Two-wheel or four-wheel.** Most modern cars need a four-wheel alignment because the rear toe or camber is adjustable. A front-only alignment costs less on vehicles with a solid or non-adjustable rear axle, such as many older trucks.
- **Driver-assist calibration.** Cars with lane-keeping or adaptive cruise cameras may need the steering angle sensor or camera recalibrated after an alignment. That step needs special equipment and can add $100 or more to the bill.
- **Seized or worn parts.** Rusted adjusters, worn tie rod ends, ball joints or control arm bushings have to be freed or replaced before the car can be aligned. Those parts and the extra labor can cost more than the alignment itself.
- **Lifetime alignment plans.** Some tire stores sell a lifetime alignment plan for about the cost of two alignments. It pays off if you keep the car for years, drive on rough roads or plan more suspension work.

## What happens during the job?

1. Check tire pressures and inspect tie rods, ball joints, bushings and wheel bearings for wear that would prevent an accurate alignment.
2. Mount the car on the alignment rack, attach the sensors or targets and measure toe, camber and caster at each wheel.
3. Compare the readings with the maker's specifications and adjust the rear first, then the front, where angles are adjustable.
4. Center the steering wheel and recalibrate the steering angle sensor or driver-assist camera if the car requires it.
5. Print the before and after readings and test-drive to confirm the car tracks straight with a centered wheel.

## What should a fair quote include?

- Before and after measurement printout
- Adjusting toe, camber and caster where adjustable
- Centering the steering wheel
- Checking tire pressure and steering parts for wear
- A test drive

## How to pay less for wheel alignment

- Ask for the before and after printout so you can see what was out of spec and what was adjusted.
- Consider a lifetime alignment plan if you keep the car several years and drive on rough roads.
- Combine the alignment with new tires or suspension work, when you need one anyway.
- Skip routine alignments when the car tracks straight and the tires wear evenly, since most cars have no fixed interval.
- Replace worn steering parts the shop finds before aligning, or the alignment will not hold.

## Signs you need it

- Car pulls to one side on a straight, flat road
- Steering wheel is off-center when driving straight
- Tires are wearing on the inside or outside edge
- You just installed new tires or steering or suspension parts
- You hit a large pothole or curb

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does a wheel alignment cost?

Expect $100 to $250 for a four-wheel alignment at an independent shop in 2026. Dealers usually charge $150 to $300. Driver-assist camera calibration, if needed, is extra. Front-only alignments on older vehicles with non-adjustable rear axles can cost less, and seized adjusters add labor.

### Does an alignment fix a shaking steering wheel?

Usually not. Shaking at highway speed is most often a wheel balance problem or a damaged tire, and shaking only when braking points to the rotors. An alignment fixes pulling and uneven tire wear. Ask the shop to check balance and tires first if the wheel shakes.

### How often do I need a wheel alignment?

There is no fixed interval for most cars. Get one when you install new tires, replace steering or suspension parts, hit something hard, or notice pulling or uneven wear. Some owner's manuals suggest a periodic alignment check, which a shop can do quickly during other service.

### What are the signs my car needs an alignment?

The car pulls to one side on a straight, flat road, the steering wheel is off-center when driving straight, or the tires wear on the inside or outside edges. A steering wheel that does not return to center after turns can also point to alignment or worn steering parts.

### How long does a wheel alignment take?

Most shops take about an hour. Seized adjusters, worn parts that must be replaced first and driver-assist camera calibration can add time. If the shop finds worn tie rods or ball joints, they will usually quote the repair and align the car after those parts are replaced.

### What is the difference between a two-wheel and a four-wheel alignment?

A two-wheel alignment adjusts only the front wheels and is used on vehicles with a solid, non-adjustable rear axle. A four-wheel alignment measures and adjusts both axles. Most modern cars need a four-wheel alignment so the front and rear wheels track in the same direction.

### Do I need an alignment after new tires?

It is a good idea, and many tire stores recommend it. A misaligned car can wear out new tires quickly, and some tire warranties ask for proof of alignment. If the car drove straight and the old tires wore evenly, ask for an alignment check rather than a full adjustment.

### Can a pothole knock my wheels out of alignment?

Yes. A hard hit on a pothole or curb can shift the alignment and also bend a wheel, tie rod or control arm. If the car pulls, the steering wheel is suddenly crooked or you hear new noises after an impact, have the alignment and steering parts checked.

### Can I do a wheel alignment myself?

Not accurately for most drivers. A modern alignment uses a computerized rack to measure angles to fractions of a degree, and many cars also need the steering angle sensor reset. Home methods with string or tape can get close on toe, but a shop alignment is far more precise.

### Why does my car still pull after an alignment?

A pull can also come from a tire with an internal belt problem, uneven tire pressure, a sticking brake caliper or worn suspension parts. Ask the shop to swap the front tires side to side and check brakes and pressures. Many shops recheck the alignment free within a short period.
