# Radiator replacement cost

- **Typical cost:** $500-$1,200
- **Parts:** $150-$550
- **Labor:** 2-4 hours
- **Dealer:** $900-$1,800

## Quick answer

Replacing a radiator usually costs $500 to $1,200 at an independent shop. Aftermarket radiators for common cars are reasonably priced, and the labor includes draining, refilling and bleeding the cooling system. Trucks, towing packages and luxury cars with tight packaging are at the high end.

## What is radiator and why does it need replacing?

The radiator sheds the heat that the coolant carries away from the engine. Hot coolant flows through thin tubes in the radiator core while the fan and air through the grille pull heat out through fins between the tubes, then the cooled coolant returns to the engine. Most modern radiators use an aluminum core with plastic end tanks, and many automatic cars also have a transmission fluid cooler built into one tank.

Radiators fail mostly from age, heat cycling and corrosion. Repeated heating and cooling makes the plastic end tanks brittle until they crack, often at the seam where they are crimped to the core. Old or mixed coolant loses its corrosion protection and can cause internal clogging or pinhole leaks in the core, and road debris can puncture it from the front. A cracked radiator usually leaks slowly at first, leaving low coolant warnings and drips under the front of the car. There is no set replacement interval; many radiators last 10 years or more, especially when the coolant is changed on schedule.

## How much does radiator replacement cost?

| | Typical cost |
| --- | --- |
| Parts | $150-$550 |
| Labor | $250-$650 (2-4 hours) |
| Total at an independent shop | $500-$1,200 |
| Total at a dealer | $900-$1,800 |
| Do it yourself (parts only) | $150-$550 |

## Cost by vehicle type

| Vehicle | Typical cost |
| --- | --- |
| Compact car | $500-$750 |
| Midsize sedan | $550-$850 |
| Small SUV/crossover | $550-$900 |
| Full-size truck/SUV | $650-$1,100 |
| Luxury/European | $800-$1,200 |

Ranges are for an independent shop. Expect the high end or more for European luxury makes and dealer service.

## What changes the price?

- **Part source.** Aftermarket radiators cost much less than original-equipment parts and fit well on most common cars. Original radiators cost more but may be the better choice on some luxury or newer vehicles with tight packaging.
- **Access.** On many cars the radiator lifts out from the top once the fan shroud is removed. On others the front bumper, cooling fans or AC condenser must be moved, which can double the labor time.
- **Extra parts.** Upper and lower hoses, clamps, the radiator cap and the thermostat are often replaced at the same time because the coolant is already drained. They add to the parts bill but avoid draining the system again.
- **Transmission cooler.** Many radiators on automatic cars include a transmission fluid cooler. Its lines must be disconnected and reconnected, and the transmission fluid topped off, which adds time and fluid to the job.

## Can you do it yourself?

Difficulty: **Hard**, about 3-5 hours. Parts cost $150-$550, so doing it yourself saves the labor ($250-$650).

## What happens during the job?

1. Pressure-test the cooling system to confirm the radiator is leaking and check the hoses, cap, water pump and fans.
2. Drain the coolant and disconnect the hoses, the transmission cooler lines if fitted and the fan wiring.
3. Remove the fan shroud or any bumper, brackets and condenser mounts in the way, and lift out the old radiator.
4. Install the new radiator, reconnect the hoses, cooler lines and fans, and replace worn hoses or clamps.
5. Refill with the correct coolant, bleed the air out, top off transmission fluid, then pressure-test and check for leaks at operating temperature.

## What should a fair quote include?

- The new radiator
- Fresh coolant of the correct type
- Bleeding air from the cooling system
- Inspection of hoses, cap and fans
- A pressure test and leak check

## How to pay less for radiator replacement

- Fix a slow leak promptly, since overheating can damage the head gasket and turn a radiator job into a much bigger repair.
- Ask for a quality aftermarket radiator from a known brand, which usually costs much less than an original-equipment part.
- Replace cracked or soft hoses and the cap during the same job, when the coolant is already drained.
- Get a written quote that lists the radiator, coolant and labor separately so you can compare shops fairly.
- Change the coolant on the schedule in your owner's manual to slow corrosion and help the new radiator last.

## Signs you need it

- Coolant leaking under the front of the car
- Engine overheating or the temperature gauge climbing
- Visible cracks in the plastic end tanks
- Sludge or rust-colored coolant
- Low coolant warning that keeps coming back

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does it cost to replace a radiator?

Most independent shops charge $500 to $1,200 in 2026, and dealers $900 to $1,800. Trucks and luxury cars are at the high end. The radiator itself usually costs $150 to $550, and labor covers removing parts in the way plus draining, refilling and bleeding the cooling system.

### Can a radiator be repaired instead of replaced?

Rarely on modern cars. Most use plastic end tanks crimped to an aluminum core, and cracks are hard to repair reliably. Replacement is usually the better value. Older all-metal radiators can sometimes be repaired by a radiator shop, but few vehicles still use them.

### Can I drive with a leaking radiator?

Only a short distance while watching the temperature gauge. Running low on coolant can overheat the engine and damage the head gasket, which costs far more. Stop if the gauge enters the red. Topping off with coolant can get you to a shop if the leak is slow.

### What are the signs of a bad radiator?

Common signs are coolant drips under the front of the car, a low coolant warning that keeps returning, overheating and visible cracks or white crust on the plastic end tanks. Sludge or rust-colored coolant suggests internal corrosion. A pressure test confirms where the coolant is escaping.

### How long does a radiator replacement take?

Most shops need about 2 to 4 hours, which is why labor runs about $250 to $650. Cars where the bumper or condenser must be moved take longer. Bleeding air from the cooling system and confirming there are no leaks at operating temperature also add time.

### Can I replace a radiator myself?

It is possible but rated hard. You need to drain and dispose of coolant safely, disconnect fans and transmission cooler lines, and bleed the system properly, which some engines make tricky. Trapped air can cause overheating. If parts like the bumper must come off, a shop is usually better.

### Should I replace the thermostat with the radiator?

Often it makes sense on a higher-mileage car, because the coolant is already drained and the thermostat is inexpensive on many engines. If the radiator failed from overheating or clogging, a stuck thermostat may have contributed. Ask the shop to quote it as an option.

### Can a bad radiator cap cause overheating?

Yes. The cap holds the cooling system under pressure, which raises the coolant's boiling point. A worn cap can let coolant boil off or escape, causing overheating and coolant loss that looks like a leak. Caps are cheap, so many shops replace one with the radiator.

### Can a leaking radiator damage the transmission?

It can on cars with a cooler inside the radiator. If the internal cooler cracks, coolant and transmission fluid can mix, which can badly damage an automatic transmission. Milky pink fluid in the coolant or transmission is a warning sign. Have it checked right away.

### What type of coolant goes in a new radiator?

Use the coolant type your owner's manual lists. Makers use different formulas, and mixing types can reduce corrosion protection or form sludge. Most shops fill with the correct premixed coolant or mix concentrate with distilled water. Keep the old coolant away from pets, since it is poisonous.
