# CV axle replacement cost

- **Typical cost:** $250-$700 per axle
- **Parts:** $80-$350
- **Labor:** 1-2.5 hours per axle
- **Dealer:** $500-$1,100

## Quick answer

Replacing one CV axle usually costs $250 to $700 at an independent shop. Aftermarket axles for front-wheel-drive cars are inexpensive, so labor is often the larger part of the bill. All-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive vehicles and luxury cars are at the high end.

## What is cV axle (half shaft) and why does it need replacing?

A CV axle, or half shaft, carries power from the transmission or differential to a drive wheel. Constant-velocity (CV) joints at each end let the axle keep turning smoothly while the wheel steers and the suspension moves up and down. Front-wheel-drive cars have two front axles, and all-wheel-drive and many four-wheel-drive vehicles have more. Each joint is packed with grease and sealed by a flexible rubber or plastic boot.

The boot is usually what fails first. Age, heat, road debris and constant flexing crack or tear it, and once it splits, grease is thrown out and dirt and water get in. The joint then wears quickly and starts to click on tight turns, while a worn inner joint can cause vibration under acceleration. Lifted or lowered suspensions put the joints at steeper angles and wear them faster. There is no set replacement interval; many original axles last well over 100,000 miles if the boots stay intact, which is why a torn boot caught early matters.

## How much does cV axle replacement cost?

| | Typical cost per axle |
| --- | --- |
| Parts | $80-$350 |
| Labor | $150-$350 (1-2.5 hours per axle) |
| Total at an independent shop | $250-$700 |
| Total at a dealer | $500-$1,100 |
| Do it yourself (parts only) | $80-$350 |

## Cost by vehicle type

| Vehicle | Typical cost per axle |
| --- | --- |
| Compact car | $250-$450 |
| Midsize sedan | $280-$500 |
| Small SUV/crossover | $300-$550 |
| Full-size truck/SUV | $350-$700 |
| Luxury/European | $450-$700 |

Ranges are for an independent shop. Expect the high end or more for European luxury makes and dealer service.

## What changes the price?

- **Aftermarket or original axle.** Aftermarket axles cost less and fit most common cars well. Original-equipment axles cost more but may run quieter and last longer on some vehicles, especially ones known for vibration with cheap replacement axles.
- **Drive type.** Front-wheel-drive cars have two front axles. AWD and 4WD vehicles have more, and front axles on 4WD trucks often take more work because the hub, differential or suspension must be partly removed.
- **Rust and seized parts.** In rust-belt areas, ball joints can be stuck in the knuckle and axles can seize in the wheel hub. Freeing them takes extra time, heat or a puller, and sometimes damages parts that then need replacing.
- **Alignment.** Some cars need a wheel alignment after the job because tie rods, struts or cam bolts are separated to remove the axle. That adds about $100 to $250, so check whether the quote includes it.

## Can you do it yourself?

Difficulty: **Moderate**, about 2-3 hours. Parts cost $80-$350, so doing it yourself saves the labor ($150-$350).

## What happens during the job?

1. Road-test the car with full-lock turns and inspect both boots and joints to confirm which axle is worn.
2. Remove the wheel and the axle nut, then separate the ball joint, tie rod or strut as the design requires.
3. Pull the axle out of the hub and pry it from the transmission or differential, catching any fluid that drains.
4. Install the new axle with a new nut and retaining clip, refit the suspension parts and torque everything to spec.
5. Top off transmission or differential fluid, check the other axle's boots and test-drive with full turns.

## What should a fair quote include?

- The new axle
- A new axle nut and cotter pin or retaining clip
- Topping off transmission or differential fluid lost during removal
- Checking the other axle's boots
- A test drive with full turns

## How to pay less for cV axle replacement

- Have the boots inspected at oil changes; a torn boot caught early may allow a boot repair instead of a new axle.
- Choose a quality aftermarket axle for common front-wheel-drive cars, where it often costs much less than original equipment.
- Replace only the worn axle unless the other side's boot is also torn or the joint is noisy.
- Ask the shop whether your car will need an alignment afterward, so the quote includes it up front.
- Do it yourself if you have a breaker bar, torque wrench and jack stands and the axle nut and ball joint come apart easily.

## Signs you need it

- Clicking or popping when turning, especially in parking lots
- Torn rubber boot with grease thrown around the wheel
- Vibration when accelerating that goes away when coasting
- Clunk when shifting from drive to reverse

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does a CV axle replacement cost?

Most independent shops charge $250 to $700 per axle in 2026, and dealers $500 to $1,100. AWD vehicles and trucks are at the high end. Aftermarket axles for front-wheel-drive cars cost as little as $80, so labor is often the largest part of the bill.

### Can I replace just the CV boot instead of the axle?

Sometimes, if the boot was caught early and the joint is not yet noisy. Once dirt gets in and the joint clicks, replacing the whole axle is usually cheaper and lasts longer than a boot repair, because boot labor is similar and a worn joint stays worn.

### Is it safe to drive with a clicking CV axle?

For a short time, usually yes, but it will get worse. If the joint fails completely the car can lose drive to that wheel or, in rare cases, the axle can come apart. Have it checked soon, and avoid long trips or highway driving until it is fixed.

### What does a bad CV axle sound like?

A clicking or popping noise when turning, especially in parking lots at full lock, usually means a worn outer joint. A clunk when shifting into drive or reverse or a vibration under acceleration can point to a worn inner joint. Grease spattered inside the wheel shows a torn boot.

### How long does a CV axle last?

There is no set interval, and many original axles last well over 100,000 miles. The boot is the weak point. Once it tears, grease escapes and dirt gets in, and the joint can wear out within months. Checking the boots at each oil change catches problems early.

### How long does a CV axle replacement take?

Most shops need about 1 to 2.5 hours per axle. Easy front-wheel-drive axles are near the low end. Rusted ball joints, axles seized in the hub and 4WD front axles take longer. An alignment, if needed, adds about an hour, often at a separate shop.

### Can I replace a CV axle myself?

Yes, on many front-wheel-drive cars, if you have a breaker bar, torque wrench and jack stands. The axle nut is very tight and must be torqued to spec. Rusted parts and 4WD axles make it harder. Plan on two to three hours the first time.

### Should I replace both CV axles at the same time?

Not unless both are worn. Axles do not need to be replaced in pairs like brakes. Have the shop check the other side's boots and joints. If that boot is cracked on a high-mileage car, replacing both in one visit can save some labor later.

### Do I need an alignment after a CV axle replacement?

Only on some cars. If the shop separates the tie rod, strut or alignment cam bolts to remove the axle, the wheel angles can change and an alignment is needed. If only the ball joint is separated, alignment usually is not affected. Ask before the job.

### Why does my new CV axle vibrate?

A vibration after replacement can come from a poor-quality or wrong axle, an inner joint not fully seated, or worn engine mounts that were already there. Some vehicles are sensitive to cheaper aftermarket axles. Have the shop recheck the installation, and ask about an original-equipment axle under warranty.
